루트에 대한 에머슨 인터뷰

 

 

 

5시즌에 관한 에머슨의 8.27일자 인터뷰 중 루트 부분을 발췌해 보았다. ( 발해석 주의. 오역지적 환영)

 

 

 

 

Q. 머신의 재탄생에 관해-  핀치는  머신의 부활에 루트가 관여하게 할까요?

 

 

A. 그게 바로 5시즌의 첫부분이 될거에요. 우린 이미 그 이슈에 관해서 촬영을 꽤 했는데  논점은 ' 애초에 핀치가 머신을 정말 불구로 만들었나, 그래서 그게 사마리탄에 맞서기  어렵게 만든 것인가? 그렇다면 머신이 재탄생할 땐 그런 제약을 모두 없애는게 맞을까 ?  머신에게 새로운 핵심 코드들을 만들어야 할까 ?' 등이에요. 물론 루트는 어느 한쪽을 지지할테고 핀치는 다른쪽을 지지하겠죠. 그렇지만 상황이 나쁘기 때문에 몇년간 그랬던것처럼 필사적으로 반대할것 같진 않아요.

 

 

 

 

Q. 제가 제일 좋아하는 관계 중 하나가 핀치와 루트에요. 그 둘은 적으로 시작해서 동료로 가까워지고 있죠. 그들의 다이나믹한 관계가 어떻게 이렇게 발전해온거죠? 

 

 

A. 네 ,정말 이상한 발전이죠. 그렇지 않나요?  저도 이걸 어떻게 설명해야할지 모르겠어요.  우리가 처음 만났을 때 그녀는 절 납치하고 고문했었으니까요. ( ㅋㅋㅋㅋ)

그렇지만 이제 전 그들이 함께 해온 일들, 무릎 쓴 위험들, 해낸 의미있는 것들, 같은 전사로서 서로에 대한 필요 같은걸 생각해요.  그리고 루트는  처음만났을 땐 잘 알 수  없었던 자신의 약한 부분들을 핀치에게 여러번 드러냈어요. 우리는 그녀가 머신에 의해서 얼마나 쉽게 다치거나 무시될 수 있는지 보아왔죠.(ㅠㅠ) 그녀는 자신의 목숨을 머신에게 걸었어요. 그리고 머신이 그녀에게 말하지 않는다면 그녀는 살아갈 이유가 거의 없죠. 제 생각에 핀치는 루트의 그런부분을 깨닫고 그녀에게 조금씩 연민이나 호의를 갖게 된것 같아요.

거기다 그녀가 집착하는 존재를 바로 자신이 만들어냈다는 것도요. 루트는 세상 누구보다  핀치가 이룬 일생일대의 역작을 가장 잘 이해하고 인정해주는 사람이에요. 참 복잡하죠.

 

 

 

 

Q. 정말 멋진 관계에요. 그리고 에이미 아커는  작품 속에서 아주 매력적인 존재감을 드러내고 있구요. 심지어 다른사람들을 협박할때 조차도요.

 

A. 그녀는 최고에요.  에이미와 일하는 걸 정말 좋아해요.  우리가 같이 찍는 장면들은 끝내주죠.

 

 

 

 

Q. 루트는 다른 캐릭터들과도 비슷한 영향을 주고받아요. 특히 쇼 말이죠. 당신과 당신의 캐릭터(핀치)는  그 특별한 관계와 발전에 대해 어떻게 받아들였나요?  

 

A. 그 모든게 일어나기 시작했을 때(루트쇼 러브라인) 전 다른 시청자들처럼 놀랐고 미리 예상하지도 못했어요. 하지만 아주 재밌죠. 그 둘이 검은 옷에 쌍권총을 들고 나란히 서있는 건 인상적이에요.(웃음)

에머슨이 루트- 핀치의 관계가 어떻게 우호적으로 변했는지에 대해 설명한게 흥미롭다.  루트가 머신에게 순종하며 특별한 힘을 얻은것 처럼 보이지만 실은  그 명령아래 희생하고  무력해질 수밖에 없었다는 루트의 딜레마 + 자신의 창조물을  본인보다  믿고 따르는걸 지켜보는 핀치의 복잡한 심경을 찝어냈다.

다른 인터뷰에선  루트가 어느면에선 매우 순수(pure and innocent) 하다고 표현하기도 함.

 

루트가 머신의 명령 앞에서 선택을 해야만 할 때, 그리고 그 선택이 어떤 상실감과 혼란을 야기하던 순간마다  그 옆엔 늘 핀치가 있었단게 생각났다. 에머슨이  다른캐릭터에 대해서도 날카롭구나 했는데  돌아보니  머신 루트의 중요한 순간들을 가장 가까이서 지켜본 사람이 핀치였던 ㅋㅋ

 

그리고 에머슨이 4시즌 촬영장에서 주로 에이미와  노닥거린다는 얘기를 한적이 있는데 이게 웬지 웃기다 ㅋ 둘이 의외로 친하다는데   아빠 딸 나이차지만 친구처럼 도란도란 지내는 게  실제 루트- 핀치랑 오버랩되는 느낌

And rebuilding and reprogramming it -- do you think Finch will let Root have a hand in bringing the Machine back?

 

 Well that'll be the drama of the first part of Season 5. We've shot a bunch of material already where that's the issue, because the argument: Did Mr. Finch cripple the Machine, and make it vulnerable to the likes of Samaritan? And can or should that be undone if the Machine can be revived? Should the Machine have a new set of core principles? And of course, Root will argue for one thing, and Mr. Finch will argue for another, but he may not argue as strenuously as he would have a couple of years ago, because the situation is so bad.

 

 

 

One of my favorite relationships on the show is yours with Root. You guys go from opponents -- as Root proclaims in her first episode -- to close companions. Can you talk a bit about that dynamic and how it developed?

 

Yeah, that's a strange evolution, isn't it? I don't know how to explain it, because she kidnapped and tortured him when we first met her. But now I think, just the work they've had to do, the dangers they've braved, the good they have done, their need for one another as soldiers -- and I think she's, over time, shown him vulnerabilities that weren't apparent when we first met her. We see how easily she's hurt by the Machine, or by the Machine ignoring her. She's given her life to the Machine, and if the Machine's not talking to her, there's not a lot to live for. So I think Mr. Finch recognizes that and feels tenderly toward her because he's an empathetic person. And also because the thing that she's fixed herself on is the thing he made. She, more than any living human, understands and appreciates his life's work. It's complicated.

 

 

 

It definitely is, but it's a great relationship. And Amy Acker is a very charming presence on-screen, even when she's trying to threaten other people.

 

She's the greatest, I so love working with her. Our scenes, they just crackle when we do them.

 

 

 

And her character seems to have that same effect on other characters, especially with Shaw. How aware were you, or your character, with regard to that particular relationship and its development?

 

I was as surprised as the viewers were when that whole thing blew up. I wasn't expecting it. But, then it's very entertaining. The two of them side by side, in black, with guns in both hands, that's a choice image. [Laughs]

 

 

 

And what has been your favorite relationship on the show, with your character?

 

You mean, what character do I like interacting with?

 

 

Yeah.

Root. I love her. It's always dangerous, it's always unpredictable.
